Green Waves: Sustainable Garden Blossoms at the Port
A New Green Space for the Port of Saint John
We at Shades of Green have been working on an exciting project with the Port of Saint John. The auxiliary port needed more greenery for residents and tourists to enjoy while also creating an environment for local wildlife to thrive. Viewable from the boardwalk outside the Hilton Uptown, you can see the updated garden inside the floating metal barge. Along the path to this new installation, you’ll find additional gardens and resting areas.
This project has recently been completed, and our team is ecstatic about the results. We are proud to be part of a project that has significantly improved the ecological landscape of such an important area of Saint John.
Incorporating Ecoraster at the Port of Saint John
Ecoraster is an eco-friendly paving option that allows stormwater to naturally filter back into the ground while maintaining stabilization. This feature is particularly beneficial for New Brunswick's weather and geography, as it reduces the risk of flooding and polluted runoff.
Coir Matting and Rolls Installation at the Port of Saint John
At the Port of Saint John, we've implemented coir matting and rolls to combat erosion and stabilize soil in our new green spaces. The coir matting protects against wind and water erosion, retains soil moisture, and supports plant root growth. Coir rolls along banks and slopes act as natural barriers, filtering water flow and preventing soil loss. As these materials biodegrade, they enrich the soil and sustain plant life, contributing to a resilient and environmentally friendly landscape at the port.
The importance of Marram Grass in the Port Design
Marram grass is a cornerstone of our eco-friendly design at the Port of Saint John, providing essential coastal stabilization and erosion prevention. With minimal upkeep once established, it offers versatile applications from beach stabilization to ornamental landscaping, enhancing the port's natural beauty with its rustic charm and graceful elegance.
Embracing Green Spaces at the Port of Saint John
It's thrilling to see the Port of Saint John embrace green spaces and foster collaboration with local businesses. By integrating sustainable initiatives like marram grass and other ecological enhancements, the port not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also promotes environmental stewardship within the community. This collaborative effort showcases a shared commitment to creating a greener, more vibrant future for Saint John.
This project would not have been possible with the commitment from Saint John Port Authority, Maguire Excavating, Shades of Green owner and Operator Brenda Carpenter and our award winning in house designer Sara Norman.
